Content in Context Conference

Lisa Guernsey  and Michael H. Levine will be hosting a session titled, “Screens Aren’t the Issue – Understanding 21st Century Literacy,” at the 2016 Content in Context conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lisa and Michael will discuss the new vision and techniques the digital reading revolution requires from learning resource creators — and define what they think are best practices for creating effective educational content in any environment.

Michael and Lisa will be talking about Tap, Click, Read at the CoSN 2016 Annual Conference being held April 4 -7, 2016 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC. Their session will take place on April 5, 2016 from 9:15 am to 10:15 am on the main stage of the Columbia Ballroom.

Getting the InTEL: Interactive Map Highlights Tech-Integrated Early Literacy Programs

Last month, New America and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop released Integrating Technology in Early Literacy, an interactive map showing more than 30 parenting and early education programs across the country that are embedding new technologies in their efforts to support language development and early literacy.

How Do You Find a Great Educational App?

Last month, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and New America released a report of our recent market scan and content analysis of language- and literacy-focused apps for young children. The report, titled Getting a Read on the App Stores, presented our key findings regarding the characteristics in the apps’ in-store descriptions as well as various features within their actual content.

Tap, Click, Read – And Connect: Early Literacy in the Digital Age

  The Joyce Foundation will be holding a cocktail reception to celebrate the book, “Tap, Click, Read: Growing Readers in a World of Screens,” and a new project that maps the most innovative digital tools used for childhood development. During the event, co-hosted by LEAP Innovations, authors Michael H. Levine, the Founding Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Lisa Guernsey, Director, Learning Technologies Project at New America, will discuss the project and sign copies of the new book.   Event Schedule: 6:00 pm –  Cocktail reception 6:30 pm –  Program Welcome – Phyllis Lockett, CEO, LEAP Innovations Introduction – Jeff Schoenberg, advisor to The J.B. and M.K. Pritzker Family Foundation, which funded the book. “Tap, Click, Read” co-author Lisa Guernsey on “The Diane Rehm Show”

On Thursday, November 5, Lisa Guernsey, co-author of “Tap, Click, Read: Growing Readers in a World of Screens,” appeared on the NPR program, The Diane Rehm Show as part of a panel on teens, toddlers and mobile devices. Guernsey discussed how educators and parents can help children develop literacy skills with the use of mobile devices and screen time.
